Don't Toss Butts

Did you know that it’s a crime to toss a lit cigarette from a car? It is.

Offenders could be arrested and charged with a first-degree misdemeanor.

Deputies are on the lookout for motorists who toss cigarettes or any other lit substances onto Collier County roadways.

It is a violation of Florida law to throw, drop, or dispose of a lighted match, cigarette, cigar, ashes, or other flaming or glowing substance onto a roadway, or any substance that could cause a wildfire.

The discarding of lit substances can cause major environmental, social and economic damages. The loss of habitat, homes and even lives can result from discarding a lit substance onto a roadway.

So keep your butts in your car.

When the yellow lights on the school bus are flashing, that’s your sign to slow down.

When the red lights on the bus are flashing, that’s your sign to stop.

To make sure motorists heed these signs, throughout the school year, the Collier County Sheriff’s Office will be cracking down on motorists that pass school buses that are stopped to load or unload children.

Deputies have handed dozens of citations to motorists for passing stopped school buses and speeding near bus stops during crackdowns this school year.

Checkpoints will be conducted throughout the year to raise public awareness about the dangers of driving an unsafe, ill-equipped vehicle.

CCSO Enforcing Seat Belt Law

Buckle up or pay up.

Click It or Ticket is under way.

Collier County Sheriff’s Office deputies are watching motorists to make sure everyone is buckled up in cars.All vehicles are a target.

The annual two-week nationwide safety belt enforcement campaign ends June 1.

The fine for not wearing a seat belt is $73.50 in Collier County.Safety belts save lives.

Most of the people who die on Florida’s roadways are not buckled up.

So far this year in Collier, out of the 11 traffic deaths where a seat belt could have been worn, nine people did not wear one.

CCSO Gearing Up For Click It Or Ticket

Buckle up or pay up.

Click It or Ticket is here once again.

And the Collier County Sheriff’s Office will be cracking down on motorists who aren’t buckled up during the annual nationwide safety belt enforcement campaign.

This year’s Click It or Ticket Memorial Day campaign runs May 19 to June 1. During last year’s campaign, from May 21 to June 1, CCSO deputies wrote 2,731 safety belt citations, the second highest number of any law enforcement agency in Florida.

All vehicles will be a target to see if the driver and their passengers are wearing their seat belt.

Some basics:
- The driver and front-seat passenger must wear a seat belt.
- Anyone younger than 18 must wear a seat belt no matter where they are sitting.
- Getting a ticket for not wearing a seat belt will cost you $73.50. A ticket for violation of child restraint violations will cost you $120.50.

School Safety Tips

Keeping youngsters safe on their way to and from school is as important to the CCSO as it is to parents.

Children need to know ahead of time what to do if they are approached by a stranger, and parents need to know how to minimize the chance of that happening.

The CCSO has compiled a tip sheet that outlines exactly what families can do to help ensure that their children will be safe in their travels to and from school.
